My 1st 3d modelled head...
...considering I'll be doing 'Virtual Environments' next year I thought I'd try and get some organic modelling down. Ive been putting it off for a while as the process seemed really complicated and couldn't get my head around starting with a cube and building features from it. However I found some tutorials that build the face up with polygons using the line tool and pulling the vertices's using the profile plane. After abit of practise I managed to produce quite a realistic head... and am really happy with it.
I used to watch 'making of' documentaries on animation and see them building up faces on MAX but used to think that such techniques were way beyond me... but now I can do it... wahey!

My questionnaire was designed to get the best feedback from the users I tested it on. I set up my Laptop, including WiiRemote in the universities lobby hoping to grab passersby to test on.

The questions I asked were;

1 - Male/Female.

2 - What course are you studying?

3 - Do you like the concept of an online portfolio?

4 - Did you feel the portfolio easy to navigate?

5 - Did you get a sense of the creators identity by using the interactive?

6 - Is an online portfolio an effective way to promote a artist/designers work?

7 - Did the WiiRemote add to the interaction?

8 - Would you be interested in having an online portfolio?

I found 10 people that was interested in testing my design, all giving valuable feedback. The general comment was that there wasn't enough prompts but was all impressed with visual design of the site.

Unfortunately the place where I tested had too much light beaming on the screen which made it hard to see some of the features.

Taking the testers comments on board has led me to think of ways I could improve my project, however I left the testing stage far to close to the deadline and have not had time to make said changes... I will make them though... but I will not be able to submit the revised version.

I produced a FlashGraph of some of the results... embedded below is a slideshow of keyframes.

Is it first drafty in here or is it me?...
Well this is my first upload of my project... I will be taking this to my questionnaire stage and testing it on the unsuspecting public... I'm happy with it(ish) there are things I might change but feel its good enough for testing. If you go on my Blog and test this out could you let me know what you think of it as feedback at this stage would be really useful.

AKA - WHITEBOARD MARATHON

As a sub-project a group of student were asked to set up a whiteboard and produce 5 days worth of whiteboard animation... we set up in the Bonnington, School of art building and asked passers-by to donate abit of time and talent.
So from 10am until 4pm, Monday to Friday we processed about 7gigs worth of animation, with the previous days animation projected near to where we were set up.
The group consisted of Edward Christie, Jacqui Pickup, Laurel Plain-Jones, Steven Bailey and myself.
I think we all had a great time producing it and was a great insight into involving people in art, and that was one of the things that worked... The project itself had no direction and relied heavily on improvised creation, so the animation turned into an ever-changing piece of work.
I was surprised how willing people were to give up some of their time to put down some weird animation... but they did... and more importantly everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
The work was to coincide with the 'Drawing Out' exhibition held at the Bonnington/Waverly building at Nottingham Trent UK.

DESIGN YOUR INTERACTION
...After completing the design of my project aesthetics the next step would be to focus on the interaction design elements. Being that I'm offering the WiiRemote as an alternative interaction method, the design for interaction should coincide with this control method but also work with standard mouse interaction. I'd like my project to retain an element of exploration, so I wont have prompts and clear labelling, I hope this will entice the user to find their own way around my interface.
The motion of interaction will be that you select a feature on my Avatar head it will then animate a transformation that will display another menu for the user to select from... there will be a back button which will reverse the animation, taking the user back to the main screen.

Below I have uploaded a slide show... that shows full rendered key frames.

Im liking the look of this so far... my post production consisted of batching out of photoshop with a 'PaintDaubs' filter. I considered the point when a user 'hovers' over a button, there be a projection on the 3d environment that highlights what it is the user will be selecting.

...DEVELOPMENT.

It feels better now I know exactly what I'm doing.... and because allot of the creating (in regards to my Avatar Head being made already) is already done, I can now plan the processes of translating the work into Flash. But first I need to render out all the animations needed to navigate my interactive. Another task would be to make a 3dimensional SLAP WRK logo on 3DSMax. Because the head is made primarily from strips I thought it would be good to produce the logo in the same way... which highlights my focus of developing this project to have a uniform feel...

Hmmmmmm....

I started to develop my 3d pop up project, but there was an underlying feeling that it wasnt right, so I decided to change my whole idea.

After reviewing my Avatar project, I thought it was a shame that I couldnt include my Avatar head as it taken me a while to make and I thought it looked good but didnt show its best within my Avatar CGI short film.

CONCEPT

So this idea will be to have my Avatar head displayed as a menu for my university work (I did say that I wanted to include my OVERALL identity but as Im trying to represent or reflect my SLAP WRK brand I thought it best to hold back on being too personal and try and project SLAP WRK corporate identity).

The work I'll include will be my animation work from year 1 and a few 2dimensional images I produced before starting university, I also animated a series of skits, designed to advertise SLAP WRK they will also be embedded into my design.

IDEAS?....
Initially my idea was to produce a 3Dimensional version of my own sketchpad, it would navigate through my University and work, pretty much the same way as a DVD menu for a film. But after my presentation, following advice from Jools that my University work doesn't best summarise my identity as a whole so I decided to introduce elements of my OVERALL identity.
...which brought me to my second idea which will be an interactive, 3dimensional pop up book that tells a story about the stages of my life. I thought this would best project my identity as the user could navigate my past all the way up to my present. Starting from my parents getting together(but not the act, as that would be disturbing!) up to my hopes for the future.

RESEARCH...
I imagine my pop up book to appear like a collage, setting a scene, filled with popular cultural items of the decade.... IE; I was born in the 80's, so in that scene I'd have toy's, fashion and music that represent that time....
After searching I found a book by Marion Bataille called 'ABC3D'. This book goes through the alphabet in pop up style, its really clever, well designed and love the way it seems to have turned optical illusion into physical illusion.. check it out below...

Alternative interaction methods

Ive been playing the wii recently, 'working' my way through ResidentEvil : The Umbrella Chronicles. Its a cool game, it goes through the first four games of the Resident Evil series, but in the style of a lightgun game using the wiiRemote pointer/cursor. I also purchased a new laptop and wondered if I could control my interactive using the wiRemote as a cursor so 'googled' "wii for PC". I found that you could operate the cursor using the tilt functions of the wiiRemote (tilt back for up, twist left for the cursor to move left). This taken away from the point of me wanting to use the wiiRemote pointer.
The wiiRemote has an infrared tracking camera. The wiiSensor bar emits infrared light which tells the wiiRemote where its pointing. I thought that the sensor bar tells the wii and the wii tells the remote where its pointing, this isn't the case as no information passes down the sensor bars connection to the wii, all that connection is for is to power the infrared LEDs. I found that you could even use two candles as a sensor bar and the wii would work exactly the same.FACT.(this course is slowly turning me into a nerd....also...FACT.)

After looking on various forums I found that I'd have to make a sensor bar for my laptop with the USB powering the infrared LEDs. Ive not had an electronics 'project' since school, but am kinda aware of what resistors are... so just went for it. I brought all the bits from Maplins and got soldering!...
The WiiRemote is connected to the pc by Bluetooth, so had to sync those.
...and it works!

We was asked to start developing designs for our own logo. As we've not really covered this type of design in a brief it was a good opportunity to get back to grips with my graphic design experience and develop my ideas as I would when studying graphic design at college.

What makes logos and corporate identities stand out in my view is ones that intrigue the audience instantly. One that stands out to me now are the quick animations MTV used to throw into their programming and most recently channel4's 'estings'. I like the estings because they use quick contemporary animations and even try to include their creative audience by holding competitions for them to have their own 'esting' animations shown.

POTENTIAL?

I can see the potential in this software for the future, but I mean waaaaaaaay in the future. So imagine in a 100 years, or even a 1000 years time! the technological advances will hope to make the whole thing so much more believable, and once when it is totally believable?... what going to happen then? plugging your real self into a computer generated environment and carrying out your full time life out in a generated one... the whole thing has tones of 'The Matrix'. I watched that film again recently and because I was doing this project at the time, the thoughts about 'what is an Avatar?' were fresh in my mind. I came to the conclusion that SecondLife (of the future) has the only logical conclusion of operating similar to the environment in 'The Matrix'.

Overall I thought that SecondLife was OK, if you wanted to have fun with it. I found allot of people out there that take the whole thing abit too serious. Steve had encounters with avatars getting really upset about being asked about their avatar identity, he found himself being verbally attacked by an avatar that was 'employed' as a 'secretary' for a 'businessman' defending her 'boss'!!! the whole thing was strange.

AVATAR ENCOUNTERS.
Throughout my investigating of SecondLife, I travelled around with Steven Bailey. The computers we used were in the same room and it was a laugh telling the other one to do something and the other watch it on their screen... (cos lets face it, were all easily pleased)
For some reason I thought conversing with the most extreme people I could find would be the best way to investigate the depth of SecondLife... which in turn led me to find a 'world' titled 'pornland'. Before going on SecondLife I imagined their would be some pretty weird sexual tones and wasn't surprised when an Avatar walked past me with a 'computer c***', erect, sticking out his 'trousers'. I was more shocked that there was somebody out there that 'designed' that and imagined how long they spent on it.
I found out that you can purchase things like 'sex poses' in which you can (cooperatively, of course) carry out with another Avatar. I stood and watched as a couple of Avatars got into position for a session of exhibition, two-way oral.... and guess what.... who appears?.... the man with a computer generated penis.... I had to go at that point... and log out of SecondLife.

ENVIRONMENTS - week2

For my next chapter of SecondLife I set put to explore the environments and summarise its design aspects. I was surprised of how well my computer handled the huge amount of data whilst running this application, and was also surprise at the level of detail architecture wise. This place is massive and the customisation options allow anyone to build anything they want... which left me with wonder of what this place will be like after 100years of development.

I'm In!! - week1
...it took me a while to get in here as my laptop has got a outdated video card, so I used schools computer to access SecondLife.
As explained my initial thoughts of SecondLife type applications laid in the negative, but decided to have a little fun with it. I decided my avatar would be a reporter of experiences within this world. I would go round trying out all the features and conversing with the inhabitants to report back to my Blog.
The first thing you have to do is create your avatar and was quite shocked in the level of customisation that is offered to you. You can obviously change the usual things like, sex, skin tone, hair etc... but extra features included increasing the bulge in your trousers and deciding if your character in 'bow-legged'.... even thought these customizations are questionable in there point, it gives the users room to create individual avatars.
Once I created my avatar I started to explore the world. Initially you placed into a 'lobby' type place, in which you have to complete certain tutorial task to access the main SecondLife arena. Its a good idea to introduce people to the functions and features before stepping into the main world because I imagine for people not used to 3dimensional environments it could get quite confusing.
Something else that I liked was the ability to fly... there are other modes of transport eg cars, bikes, jet skis etc...

SecondLife

Part of this brief is to investigate one of many online 3d community environments. I chose Second life as its the most popular and most developed. Before even going on the site my thoughts about this sort of thing were slightly sceptical, I assumed the people who would use this sort of application would be 'nerds', not actually able to make things happen in their first life. I admit that this is a very judgemental and ignorant view and completely hypocritical as thoughout my life I have had allot of interest in 3d worlds and interactive environments, so why would I 'slag it off'?(so to speak)... well, I just think that theres not much point in walking around in a 'world' conversing with 3dimensional versions of people, like in gaming theres always a point/objective of your interaction with the environment and that gives the whole thing a little purpose. However with SecondLife, I thought the people your likely to meet would be individuals who have created this hyper sized version of themselves and they converse with each other.... "...but why?"

SHORT EVALUATION

The development of this project demanded allot of time from me, not just producing it, more time was spent using trial-and-error techniques to get the effect(s) that I wanted.

I'm very happy with my results and feel happy that I didn't just settle on a single idea, just to get it finished. Early on in the project allot of my time was used up by developing 'Icon4Emoticons', time that I'd have preferred to spend on 'I, Avatara' which highlights the importance of project management, however I learnt allot about 3dStudioMax in that time and might not have had the software experience(though small) to develop 'I, Avatara' in the same way.

Throughout the development I was constantly showing other people and explaining my ideas, which worked out well because I would take any feedback and then try to modify the project accordingly. Most people thought the visuals were nice and this confidence carried on to help me develop other factors I wanted to express.... like atmosphere, mood and room for a story.

I feel this project can say allot about my Identity and this project has helped me somewhat understand what MY Identity is. I wondered if as part of a psychotherapy exercise this technique of 'defining your own Identity' would be useful for anyone 'soul-searching'.. and in fact I found a company that does just that...

It would start viewing the hallway through a reflection in the sphere, the camera will come back to show the environment. The sphere will float toward the entrance of the hallway and the camera will follow it all the way. There will be other shapes floating behind the sphere, which will all join together to form my AvatarHead, the sphere being the eye.

SCENARIO CONCEPT 2
My second idea would be to have speakers booming at the end of the corridor. The central sphere of one the speakers would extrude and roll down the corridor. The sphere would be reflective and the main viewpoint will be of what the sphere reflects. At the end of the corridor my Avatar head will be waiting and as the sphere approaches the Avatar head it will then to eat it and the hallway scene until there is nothing left but the Avatar head.
I'd like to have soft, simple music in the background. I chose 'Nanou2' by AphexTwin, as this track contains allot of emotion but is really simple in its arrangement.

I liked this version because of the distorted reflections. The shadows created by the blinds work well at washing over the sphere as it rolls. The music sets the atmosphere and suits the emptiness of the environment, however I feel the music doesn't suit the action towards the end of the animation.

As I said, my idea will be to create a rendition of my own face. I'll attempt to 'sculpt' using the shape modifying tools in 3DSTUDIOMAX. I'd like to express the idea of being built up from various different factors resulting in a stylised outcome.

The development of this 'head' built up in the same way as when I produced a 5foot man out of recycled materials(below), using layers of materials to build shape.

I ended up donating that project to BlueCoat Infant school, in hope to educate on the amount of recyclable media we throw away every day.

MYAVATAR - ENVIRONMENT
"What space would I create for my Avatar?"
My visualisation for this space focused on atmosphere and shadows. I aimed to keep it simple but have small details casting interesting shadows. For me, maps&colour didnt pay any part as tone was a main focus.
I purposely didnt do much outside research, I thought a part of my identity would be what I'd choose to create. I cant wait to see everyones environments and Avatars, its possible that they may express the creators self sense of character/identity.
I decided to 'sketch' on 3DSTUDIOMAX, it made more sense to practise using the software in which I use for the final design.
The idea would be for a hallway. It will be mis-arranged, like someone just moving in(signifing being 'between' places). More than anything I'd like to express room for viewers perseption, it'd be interesting to see what other people translate my Avatar into my identity(which could signify my way of atempting to express through art).

Avatar and environment should depict ourselves and explain something about our identity.

CONCEPT
'What can I produce that best dipicts me and myself?"...

Its a hard thing to wrap up and all this self analysis is tricky as it is. How could I capture my identity? Normally when I produce handdrawn work its of some random out of the paper or a celeb in an old magazine. Its not that Ive not drawn myself before its more that I see myself in the mirror everyday and theres more pictures of randoms and celebs lying around the house...so....

HOW CAN I CREATE MY IDENTITY?!...

I find it hard to visualize my identity not because Im unsure of it, the reason is because I know (better than anyone) of all the different aspects of myself and feel concentration of one may neglect another. I may be trying to get too deep on the matter of my 'identity', but I cant help it, and another thing that makes the task more difficult is the fact that we have to produce (upto) 3mins of video using a program(s) that can develop anything in your imagination (providing you have the knowledge).
My Idea would be to re-create my face, as I feel it represents best my 'visual' identity. I would try and stylise the outcome as much as possible and keep a grip on what the computer was producing and what I produce.

WHAT IS AN AVATAR?!

I found that the original definition of 'Avatar' came from Hindu philosophy meaning "bodily manifestation of a divine being." Considering the original definition I thought the name 'Avatar' (being used for representing ourselves in a computer generated environment nowadays) was too strong. But thinking on it longer I realised the simularity of their meanings. ie; if I create a character inside a computer generated environment it would be my manifestation of a divine (human) being.

Gaming has played a big part in my young-time-wasting days, and have witnessed the growth in 'create-a-avatar' features in video games. I guess in gaming the aim is for total imursion, a way to involve the gamer more would to allow them to manifest into the character onscreen. From games like 'TonyHawk'sProSkater1' on the 'PS1' up to most recently 'Mii' characters on the 'NintendoWii' the idea has been to encourage re-creating yourself for it to then interact within a computer generated environment.

WORLDDESIGN
I knew that objects in this world will hover in space, now I had to design the worlds layout. I decided on a world that too hovers in much the same way as objects within it, however the layering would be vertical.
The levels would then represent parts of a town. ie; the bottom levels will be suburban, the level up from those will be commercial and the top level will be a park. Linking them I thought that there could be ZebraCrossing and/or roads.
The roads in this world will have cars on them whizzing past. Other items that I'd like to include would be bins, trafficlights, trees, hedges etc.

I was really happy with the way these came out and found it quite easy to develop a reasonally detailed world. I liked the 'PIGEON WALKING ACROSS THE STREET' & how easy it was to animate a panning camera. This was useful for showing the dimensions of this 'world'.

NARRATIVE...?

My thoughts on a narrative were along the lines of a character mis-interacting with his computer generated environment. A character would be teleported to a CG city, fully 3Dimensional but 2Dimensional in its interactivity ie; the character will not be able to interact with his surroundings in the way he would expect to - might feel hungry but cannot eat food, character will see people however the people will only be mapped AVI etc. I suppose I'd like to capture MIS-INTERACTION.

INFLUENCES
I joined a trip to London and visited TateBritain where they have John Cecil Stephenson's 'painting1'. Amongst the other artists work this one stood out to me as it captured the look of my 'AVIWorld' as when I imagined it.
What I liked was the gravity defing shapes, just hovering in space. The arrangement of shape was almost chaotic but the composistion is definately precise.
When I saw this particular piece it wasnt hard for me to imagine my AVI's mapped onto the shapes. I could imagine 'NO ENTRY' signs and buildings placed into space, with no care of perspective or scale with 'our world'. I wasnt really considering the colour or texture(which I'm sure were both as precise as the composition), purely the arrangement of shape.

After further study of John Cecil Stephenson's work I thought I'd try and reproduce his 'Painting1' piece using 3DSTUDIOMAX. The idea came from wanting to be able to see his work from another angle, trying to understand the depth of viewpoint. I imagine the shapes to be layered on top of one another and hovering independantly.
The first one I re-created I made sure to use a panning camera viewpoint, basicly so that I could show my interpretation of depth of the piece. Next I mapped some JPG's Ive collected of signs in the street(mainly because invisioned it when first saw the work and wanted to see what it looked like 3Dimensionally.

CONCEPT
Whilst I was working through the 'OXOBOUNCE' animation task and then mapping AVI's to a surface/object, I thought of a world constructed like this. Solid shapes crudly placed into an environment ie; One big square block to suggest a building, mapped onto that an AVI of a building. There will be rectangular blocks with sky AVI's mapped on to them...etc.
The importance of an AVI map is so that I can capture movement, mainly predestrians in or outside the building. Again I stress the word 'crude', the whole look I imagine for this is clumped together and random. The look will be unpolished which is conveinent because of my own capabilities using 3DMAX.

DEVELOPMENT
3DMax seems to have a really simple method for drawing 3Dimensional objects. I dont feel to able to produce anything that I want, but these short excersises are good for developing my 3DMAX skills. I can honestly say that I'd love to be as fluent with 3DMAX as I'd like to think I can be with Photoshop. I think with completing the worksheets set and abit of practise I'll soon be able to produce/create anything my imagination allows.

I really like using this software. 3DstudioMax - Brief Introduction1
This is a program that Ive always wanted to get to grips with. Ive always liked games/gaming and have always wondered about how the developers produce them. I know allot would be down to programing and games engines but it would be the side of level/character design or art direction that would hold my imagination.
Another reason for interest in this software would lie in plain 3D design. I cant wait to produce my own world using this medium.

The Tale Of How - TheBlackHeartGang

We were shown this short in a lecture. The visuals blew me away and the fact that we were going to be learning the techniques used to produce work like this was even more exciting. I was surprised to the fact of it being produced on 3d animation software, it was allot more stylised than usual CGI blockbusters and really stretched my imagination further to imagine what I may be able to produce (once gone through the sometimes painful process of getting to grips of the software)

The navigation of 3dmax seems to be quite friendly(at these stages). Flash(personally) went a long way round to do a basic action. I followed step by step instructions and all seemed to as simple as it needed to be.

After completing the 'BrainOperation' Interactive project I decided to construct another of my own interactive in the form of an 'interactive portfolio'....

For the main picture I used some Christmas wrapping paper... I was wrapping some Christmas presents and noticed the highly reflective surface on the reverse side. I taped a piece onto a door, pushed my face onto it, screwed up the paper abit and took the photo. I edited me out of the photo. I thought it worked quite well... and considering I couldn't get a raw image like this through using PhotoShop adds to the sense of the image being totally unique.

EVALUATION
When given this project my instinct was to freeze up as previous experience's with Flash didn't go my way. However I approached it with a fresh head and accepted what I might be able to gain from being able to use this software. I knew that I needed all my scenes, buttons and sounds ready so got on with those. Before the main 'find a character' screen I'd have a main screen, on that you can select 'me', from there the next screen would be of my brain which you can click to bring up the 'find a character' screen.

AM I HAPPY?...
Considering that I'm not used to this program I found the development quite painful. However my persistence paid off as I figured out how to program the navigation of my project. Ive always liked this picture and it feels great to know that I programmed behaviour for it to be interacted with. Taking the creation a level further in turn helping me develop another format for my design work. This project has taught me the most so far and has proved useful in helping me to understand Flash&ActionScript.

Action VS Interaction

Most parts of my day are spent interacting with some sort of interactive computerised interface. I wake up to my mobile phones alarm, I scramble, half asleep try and interact with the snooze button as quick as I can. The kettle goes on(interaction most important) Then wake up to some breakfast comedy on channel4. I'll be flicking over and adverts and programs urging me to press the red button and visit this certain website...

(Television now boasts its interactivity services. It lets you pause, record and re watch missed programs. With all this choice and so many users, an easy-to-use interface must of been of high importance to the developers)

OK... so Ive left my house... I'm Interacting with my phone again to get the MP3player on. Mobile phone technology nowadays allows you control allot of created content such as video, images, music etc all with a user friendly control system. Because of the mass popularity of mobile phones, mass accessibility was priority for happy users

The most important Interactive in my life is the PersonalComputer. It allows you to create written documents, write programming, create sound/music files, create&print imagery, create video, prepare presentations... etc.

Which brings me on to the Internet. Most of advertisements on the web is someway interactive. Rather than watching advertising on screen it allows users to engage with a subject in their own direction and on their own terms, in turn creating a successful interaction.

DAY2
...because we couldn't cut scenes, the thought of having physical cuts seemed more interesting. Because of where we were(apartment block) the elevator doors seemed to act as perfect physical cuts between the different floors. Elevators go either up or down and we all tried to capture that in a narrative sense. Someone suggested relationships and the different levels in which you engage with the person your in a relationship with;

At the start of a relationship (first contact) things are good, laughing, flirting, intimacy etc.

The middle part of a relationship it could have turned abit sour so maybe there are arguments, fighting, trust issues etc.

The last part of any relationship is sad for one or the other, crying, begging, guilt etc.

CONCEPT
a man would get into a lift and go down to the ground floor. He would encounter three characters each displaying a level of engagement with his or her partner.

Man in lift - Steven Bailey - 'Impatient operator' - Tense, fidgety, sighs allot, interaction between characters.

1st floor - Laurel Plain-Jones - 'First contact with partner' - Happy, laughing, arranging to meet up again, compliments.

2nd floor - Troy Browne - 'Middle part-Argument' - Angry, shouting/cursing, threatening.

3rd floor - Jacqui Pickup - 'Last part-Breakup' - Crying, debating breaking up.

FILMING

Filming was an issue as a caretaker was doing his rounds when we were filming, so on a couple of occasions we were interrupted by vacuuming. Our 'performances' wasn't too bad however the time in between floors was too long and not much was going on. We were interrupted again at the bottom by a guy waiting for the lift, which highlights the importance of having control over a set.

AM I HAPPY?

To be honest... not really. I don't think the characters expressed enough, the level of engagement with their partner. In all not enough was happening. The physical cuts was the best input however if we'd utilised this further I think the outcome would have been more interesting. A way we could have done this would to have had each floor make a significant impact, by possibly having more than one person on each floor... maybe a crowd of people all at the same levels of engagement with their partner IE; first floor, doors open and 20 people are there, all flirting, laughing and joking with their soon-to-be.
I feel that this project to be quite 'closed' due to the short time frame in which we had to work with and minimal allowance on camera movement. Allot of our ideas were shot back to suit the requirements.
I haven't finished thinking of new concepts for this brief and intend to work on my own over Christmas.

DAY2 - cont...
A quick experiment for 'one shot'. Our group decided to throw 20 balloons over the side of a 6 storey staircase and film from both top and bottom positions.
For this experiment I wanted to have a narrated story told. Something sad, as when I watched the balloons falling I realised a calming feeling. The balloons gave me the idea for a story about a child's birthday, told from his slightly older sisters point-of-view.I decided to make my own soundtrack on Fruityloops I considered the mood of the footage and thought a toy box sound would be ideal. Id have the story dialogue overlaid.

OUTCOME?? Poor camera quality, not enough balloons.However I thought the sound worked ok... sound quality was an issue as I recorded it using my crappy laptop and crappy laptop mic, but hey Im only playing around.

We were asked to produce a 2minute short film. Using only one angle we were asked to produce content using either 'Meeting' or 'Irritation' as a title.
GROUP
Laurel Plain-Jones, Jacqui Pickup, Realexis Christofides and myself.
CONCEPT
We all decided that 'Irritation' would be our title. We realised the importance of irritating with everything we shown in shot. Irritate with the angle/viewpoint, irritate with the content etc...

After brainstorming we decided to have an aggravated situation with the camera out of view of it. An argument of some sort but only picking up the sound.

The irritating angle would be shot behind a bench, between the slats on the backrest, reducing the viewpoint and annoying the audience.

The scene would be of a girl sitting on the bench with her back to the camera, her phone goes off (so brings the annoying interference a mobile phone has on audible technology), the girl answers and is quite obnoxious, meanwhile in the background a group of people are having an argument. The girl (whom is face-less) sometimes blocks the view of the argument hopefully irritating the audience further as they (audience) normally plied with explanation are given none and is continually getting blocked from working out whats happening for themselves.

SUMMARY
The filming was really funny to act out as Laurel and I were the 'arguers'. It was hard to keep a straight face whilst making up things to argue about. I was happy with what came out and feel we considered 'Irritation' into everything we shot.
However for some reason the cameras settings were wrong and the footage was shot in frames and lost all the sound, factors that will be highlighted from the start of the next project.
Deborah (lecturer) thought it worked well and understood all the 'irritation' factors we included.

AM I HAPPY?
Yes Im very happy with my edit. One thing that Im really happy with is that the outcome came close to my expectations in the development of the project. The photos worked well & am happy with a majority of the angles we chose. Thanks to Realexis for his thoughtfull approach and intermidiate knowledge of his camera.
A great part of this was being given the chance to link the mood of visuals with the mood of a piece of music, it has helped me understand the important relationship between the two.
Its been an amazing introduction to the type of projects I'll be practising whilst on this degree. It satisfied all of my creative needs and it feels good to be tested on my creative adapability as my usual medium is still image.

NEGATIVES???...or what to work on.
Not much, but if I had to say something I'd highlight the importance of defining clear roles and organisation. So if I was going to work on a simular project in the future I would show enthusiasm towards being responsable for angles and direction of a project, there were alot of ideas coming out and it was slightly confusing satisfing everybodies input. However having the chance to produce our own edit given back the chance to place out individual mark on the footage.

DAY3 -
...ok, so we all met up again to get the reminder of the scenes shot. We knew where we wanted to get (the graveyard) and improvised with the environments to get there. Because of where we were(in the middle of the impatient Nottingham) we encountered abit of attention from onlookers. Mostly weirdo's thinking we were doing 'weirder' things than them.

... I feel happy with the scenes. We got some good images, however because we were happy with what we saw coming out I feel we may have rushed slightly so that we could see the outcome sooner. Overall I think it may show that we applied thought to our outcome.
Cant wait to start bringing it together via Prem(each of the group are going to have their own edit).

DAY2 -
...so we got together with all our bits we needed to bring, we met round StevenBaileys apartment for the 'waking' scene. To be honest it seemed abit porno, 4people in a bedroom, 1 lying on the bed, a camera, a tripod?....lol
We planned to film up to where the man is about to leave the underground garage. As we moved from location to location we decided between us the best camera angles, considered mood and improvised with light conditions.
Filming went smooth and turned out to be a laugh actually.
I liked the shots that came out, however I think in the future I'd try and manipulate environmental lighting to coincide with the 'mood' I wanted to express.

This music Video has used stop frame animation techniques. Its moody, sketchy and goes perfect with the music even so, towards the end 'hi hat' or 'snare' shows on the screen respectfully with the beats in the music.

Things I found - 'Bolex Brothers - The Saint Inspector'

There were lots of examples of stopmotion, just putting that in the YouTube search brought up hundreds. So I searched theBolexBrothers(ref:'SecretAdveturesOfThumb').What I liked about this is how it relied on good character design, visual details and SFX to set the entire mood of the story. It keeps you guessing what the entire context of the story is.

DAY1 -
Got together with the group and brainstormed. Ideas came out to do with Illusions,Fighting,Teleportation.... we tried to develop a reason for the fight... having a reason for a fight then turned into all of us wanting to have some sort of loose story told. We all had a laugh walking around the city centre thinking of crazy plot lines. We were all trying to think of an animation with inanimate objects moving around with living objects. There was a idea involving a man doing magic at a desk which was moving round the town. I liked the idea of the desk moving round with a person stationary behind it which made me come up with the idea of a man at an office desk moving from AtoB. A majorityof the group liked the sound of it and we all pieced together the details.
We all sat down and organised what will happen in the story, what we'll need on the day of filming. We designated what each would bring the following day.

"I liked how we all thought of an idea before jumping into shooting, we planned ahead and even thought of a 'message'. The group is good and are all confident in our abilities, we communicate well and have all had input to the final idea"

The image came out quite well.. looks quite ghosty, which may have something to do with the crusifix silouette and the grainy quality. I like the image, and with digital taking over its good to see traditional methods still have alot to offer.
I combined the first image with something out of my portfolio that (i thought) suited the mood of the original.

One camera on tripod, One whiteboard, One whiteboard marker, Five students.
Task; to get the box over the tree... simple.lol

120-frames=20secs of animation.

This was a basic project but turned out to be quite effective.... we were all having a laugh doing it and the final outcomes were funny too.

I was surprised how good the animations came out considering the lack of organisation involved, this was expressed... but it worked.

Thought that it could work on any wipe-able surface(glass,window,mirror,tiles) ...
tried this;

....dont think it worked that well, but maybe with some different animatable sources(characters,objects)

MyGallery (preUNI)

Ive created an online gallery. Its all the work I done before starting University. I posted an online gallery so that people could view it and hopefully get some exposure (long shot really...) However it has paid off, the website that hosts my work ('enips') is producing a book (like a coffee table art-book) and has asked me feature in it!

...tell me what you think.

Also I posted my work on 'yougofurther' (UCAS-run student website). There was a competetion to have your work exhibited at the 'UCAS Fair' (London 7-11-07 Manchester 27-11-07), with the possibility of winning a MacBook! I entered with;

...my work was shortlisted and with that will be exhibited and I find out if I win the MacBook today (fingers-crossed!!!!).
